About

Dr Wihan de Jager

Dr De Jager obtained his MBChB at the University of the Free State in 2013 after which he started his two year internship at the East London Hospital Complex. After completion of his internship, he completed his community service year in Kimberley in Emergency Medicine and Anaesthetics. During this time, he obtained a Diploma in Emergency Medicine.

In 2017, Dr De Jager and his wife moved back to the Eastern Cape as he was appointed as a Medical Officer at Frere Hospital in East London. Here, he obtained valuable clinical and surgical experience in Ophthalmology and was fortunate enough to be mentored by Drs Peter Alexander, Steve Cook and Andrew Boliter who's experience in the field is esteemed. At the end of 2019, Dr De Jager started his Ophthalmology residency program at WITS University. During the course of the next four years, he developed a special interest in vitro-retinal work in which he also completed his Masters Degree in Ophthalmology. He is passionate about implementing effective screening programs to identify conditions such as Diabetic Retinopathy and to prevent blindness.

Dr De Jager believes that one should be ever growing and developing as a person and a doctor and therefore he prioritises attending congresses, courses and stays up to date with the latest research and developments in the field of Ophthalmology to provide his patients with the best care possible .

​

When Dr De Jager is not working, he cherishes time with his wife and children. He unwinds when he has a fishing rod in his hand or a surf board under his arm.
